Non-Governmental Organizations at the United Nations

On 25 July 1996, the Economic and Social Council adopted Resolution 1996/31 approving new procedures for consultation with non-governmental organizations and recommended that the General Assembly examine the question of the participation of non-governmental organizations in all areas of the work of the United Nations. The recommendation of ECOSOC, the new procedures for consultation and other relevant documents are included below.

69. The Secretary-General is requested to make every effort to enhance and streamline as appropriate Secretariat support arrangements, and to improve practical arrangements on such matters as greater use of modern information and communication technology, the establishment of an integrated database of non-governmental organizations, wide and timely dissemination of information on meetings, distribution of documentation, provision of access and transparent, simple and streamlined procedures for the attendance of non-governmental organizations in United Nations meetings, and to facilitate their broad-based participation.

70. The Secretary-General is requested to make this resolution widely known, through proper channels, to facilitate the involvement of non-governmental organizations from all regions and areas of the world.

  • Key Issues for the Open-ended Working Group on the Review of Arrangements for Consultations with Non-Governmental Organizations. Intervention on behalf of an Ad Hoc Committee of NGOs, New York, NY, 6/94. Identification of some of the priority concerns for NGOs from among those that were addressed during the First Session of the Open-Ended Working Group.

  • Dissemination of this Working Group's Papers in Electronic Format: Intervention of International Synergy Institute at the Intersessional Ad Hoc Open-Ended Working Group on Technology Transfer and Cooperation of the Commission on Sustainable Development, New York, 2/94. Intervention pointed out the benefits of electronic dissemination of the documents before the Working Group as well as the broader role of strengthening information infrastructure in support of sustainable development.

  • Applying Information and Communication Technology for Sustainability Intervention of the International Synergy Institute, at the first session of the Commission on Sustainable Development, New York, 6/93. Recommended, inter alia, that procedures be adopted requesting all documents submitted to the Commission be also provided in electronic format.
